When Death Occurs

When Death Occurs

After the passing of a loved one, there are numerous choices to be made. During this emotional time, seeking assistance in making arrangements can bring relief and clarity. Our cemetery staff are prepared to guide you through the decisions, ensuring the arrangements honor your loved one’s memory in the best way possible.

Contact The Proper Authorities

A legal declaration of death is required before arrangements can proceed. In a medical facility, staff will handle this declaration. However, if the death occurs at home, contacting local emergency services is necessary for the declaration. In hospice care, a staff member may declare the death. Once this legal step is completed, you can move forward with cemetery and funeral arrangements.

Begin To Make Arrangements

After the legal declaration, you may begin making arrangements. If your loved one has pre-planned specific choices, review these plans first. If not, the cemetery and funeral home teams can help you consider options that fit your family’s needs, from burial locations to types of services.

During this time, the family may choose between burial or cremation if final wishes weren’t specified. Additionally, decisions such as the date, time, and location of the service, as well as details like selecting a casket, urn, or headstone, drafting an obituary, choosing a celebrant, and selecting music or speakers, can be thoughtfully addressed with guidance from the staff.

If your loved one was active or retired military, reach out to the Veterans Administration to explore available death benefits or honors that can be included in the service.

Taking Care Of Personal Property

After a loved one’s passing, securing their personal belongings and property is important. Ensure their home and vehicle are secure, and arrange for any pets to be cared for by family or friends. Forward any mail to the person managing the estate, and alert the loved one’s employer and any scheduled appointments about the passing. Taking these steps helps to keep your loved one’s legacy protected and their estate in order.
